Engagement portraits traditionally began as a way to announce a couple's upcoming marriage.  Today's engagement photos by our definition are more of a romantic adventure.  They are an opportunity not only for a couple to announce their engagement to be married but also to tell a story of their lifestyle, hobbies, and their romantic relationship together.  It is the prelude to the first chapter of the book which will be the story of their lives together.

The first step in the planning process of any engagement session is to pick a location / locations which will characterize a couple's relationship.  For one couple it may be a mountainous backdrop.  For another it may be an urban setting with starbucks as a central theme.  You may want to include your pets, friends, home, car, hobbies and activities.

Another very important aspect to consider when planning for an engagement portrait session is the common theme and distinct attributes that make up a relationship.  For instance, one couple may be drawn in relationship to each other with a central theme of long and intimate or intellectual conversations together.
However, for another couple it may be more of an unspoken comfort that requires no verbal communication.
Yet another couple may find the strength of emotion and relationship in the childlike playfulness that they have in common.  Each of these descriptions have an emotional attribute that help us to characterize a relationship.

There is an adjective or action to describe the attribute.  For the first couple the words may be sophisticated, confident, purposeful.  The second couple we may describe as peaceful, united, serene.  The third couple could be described as whimsical, playful, unpredictable.  When we have these descriptors we are much more capable storytellers.  We will look for elements of mood in tones of light, and pick our backdrops with desciptors in mind.  We may look for simple monochromatic themes, try to create high tension with high contrast in our backgrounds, or low tension with soft filtered light.  All of the elements that God created in the natural world around us help us to describe the emotional attributes that make up the story of you.

An engagement story like this requires strong narrative vision!
